Muslim Experience in Minnesota

Historical records indicate a Muslim presence in Minnesota going as far back as the 1880s.Yet very little exists in the record about the personal experiences of Muslim Minnesotans. Current estimates put the Muslim population in Minnesota at around 140,000.

Minnesota Muslims are making an ever growing impact on the affairs of the state and the nation – from the first Muslim Congressman to the largest Somali Muslim population in the US. Capturing the experience of Minnesota Muslims through their own voices is not only crucial for relaying an integral part of Minnesota history to future generations, but also as an invaluable tool for Minnesotans to understand the religions and cultures of their neighbors.

With generous support from the Minnesota Historical Society, the Islamic Resource Group set out to capture and convey the Muslim experience in Minnesota through oral interviews and photographic portraits.

If you are a teacher, librarian, social scientist, or simply a friendly neighbor, you can now request a free DVD to learn more about the Muslim experience in Minnesota. The DVD includes 40 interviews with Muslim Minnesotans of various backgrounds – from a teacher to a university professor, from a turkey plant worker to a cardiologist, from a policeman to a Red Bull guardsman.
